about me
Aiya Akilzhanova is a Kazakh documentary filmmaker whose work blends storytelling with an ethnographic sensitivity. Rooted in personal and cultural inquiry, her films explore the textures of memory, language, and identity, often focusing on voices that are untranslatable, interrupted, or overlooked. She holds an MA in Documentary Film Directing from the Erasmus Mundus DocNomads, a highly selective European program spanning Portugal, Hungary, and Belgium, and a BA in Film & New Media and Social Research & Public Policy from NYU Abu Dhabi.
Trained across four countries, she brings a global perspective and a comprehensive filmmaking skillset, encompassing research and development, shooting, directing, editing, and sound design. She has filmed in remote villages and worked in communities whose languages she didn’t speak, building trust through presence, sensitivity, and deep listening.
